In March 2017, the Corpus Christi Literary Reading Series celebrated its 30th anniversary with a discussion of Texas literature featuring two of our previous guests, Bret Anthony Johnston and Stephen Harrigan, both of whom grew up in Corpus Christi. The wide-ranging conversation was moderated by Don Graham of the University of Texas, and Humanities Texas published a transcript of these remarks in its annual letter.

Author Experiences

This is one of the oldest and, I know now, one of the best reading series in the country, and I was honored to be invited. Then I was delighted to discover that the people who run it and attend the events are genuine and smart readers, kind, big-hearted, and a lot of fun to spend a couple of days with on the Gulf Coast. It was one of the best experiences I've had as a visiting writer, anywhere.
—Brad Watson

Not only is this one of the most vibrant literary communities I have ever had the honor of visiting, it is also one of the most FUN!  Great food and conversation with people who embrace and celebrate all areas of the arts.  It was a great privilege to be there and I would go back in a minute!
—Jill McCorkle

Being part of the Corpus Christi Literary Reading Series was one of the sweetest events of my life. Such friendly listeners! Such genuine warmth and care! Such excellent organization! Though my husband (Michael Nye) grew up in Corpus Christi (son of Judge Paul and Nina Nye) and his brothers live there, I felt surprised and charmed to be part of the community in a whole new way. I salute the terrific founders for coming up with such a great idea. It's impressive to keep anything going for 30 years. I have no doubt the other visiting writers experienced the loving readers of Corpus Christi with just as much pleasure. You have a treasure in your fine series - celebrate it!
—Naomi Shihab Nye

I still think about my time in Corpus Christi and the wonderful people I met there, avid readers all. The Literary Reading Series does important work by introducing writers to the community and starting a big conversation. I feel lucky to have taken part.
—Meg Wolitzer

One of the warmest and friendliest reading series I've ever participated in -  with a lovely, expressive audience and full Texas hospitality! This series is a treasure on our American horizon.
—Naomi Shihab Nye

The Corpus Christi Literary Reading Series is peerless in the country—a grassroots program, without institutional oversight or support, made possible by a group of avid, passionate readers.  CCLRS brings the most important visions and voices in contemporary literature to the Coastal Bend, affording the community rare access to writers who are shaping the culture and affording visiting writers the gift of a fully engaged audience.  This is a unique and uniquely vital series, and each event has the potential to change lives.  It has certainly changed mine.
